Militarily, the English Civil War was
fascinating, featuring a wide array of weaponry and constantly fluctuating situation, as each side strove to dominate particular geographic areas.
The game features sieges, the raising of militia, economic and political factors, a naval system, the revolt in Ireland (which isn't covered in any other game of the period), events in
Scotland, the emergence of the New Model Army, and random events (such as the return of the queen). The game system is interactive, built around leadership and featuring both movement and reaction movement. The combat system reflects the
tactical feel of the period and consists of three steps: cavalry combat, possible cavalry flank attack, and main infantry combat.
There are four scenarios and a campaign game. The scenarios cover the Edgehill campaign, the campaign leading to Marston Moor, the rebellion in
Ireland (solitaire), and Scotland. Playtested for over 12 months, this is both a playable game and an accurate and rewarding simulation.
