Russian Civil War - Pledge

Russian Civil War Update. Refight an epic conflict that shaped the history of the 20th century: the Russian Civil War, 1917-21! Russian Civil War Update uses a new approach to the classic SPI title, with cards as well as map and counters. This reduces game complexity and allows Russian Civil War Update to be played by a wider audience. These cards provide much of the color of the era, as well as integrating the more complex aspects of the original system into a playable format.

The map covers all of the former Tsarist Empire. The game map has been expanded to show the fighting in Central Asia, and now players can sweep to the frontiers of Afghanistan. There are four general factions: Reds (Bolsheviks), Whites (anti-Bolshevik Russians), Greens (Nationalists), and Blues (Allied intervention forces). The game system accounts for the chaos of the original conflict by giving players possible control of forces from several different factions at the same time, which may include opposing forces. This allows for an unusual degree of backstabbing in a multiplayer game, and deal making assumes critical importance. Control of forces shifts throughout the game as alliances change, and epic campaigns are played out. The Czech Legion, for example, can make its Anabasis across Siberia, courtesy of the Trans-Siberian Railroad.

Central to play of the game are the Action Cards. Cards represent historical leaders, events, and forces. These account for everything from the formation of elite shock armies down to the British plan to launch an air raid against Moscow! As with the original game, players will have the opportunity to purge each other from the Politburo, and assassins are always waiting in the wings. But the update also provides the opportunity to use Agitprop to spark uprisings in enemy strongholds. And seizing control of critical cities will give players the opportunity to draw additional action cards.

The update trades in the units counters for plastic markers, similar in concept to Diplomacy. Additional game forces include the German Freikorps, Anarchists (who can run amok anywhere), and even the appearance of the Konarmyi, the dreaded Bolshevik cavalry force. Plus there are rules for additional Allied intervention, more realistic logistics (no more transferring entire army groups across the map on a single rail line), naval movement, and armored trains.

All major and many minor leaders are represented, including Bolsheviks such as Lenin and Trotsky, Whites such as Deniken and Kolchak, nationalists such as Mannerheim and Pilsudski, as well as Nestor Makhno (the Ukrainian Anarchist leader), Sydney Reilly (the British secret agent ) and even Tsar Nicholas II himself.
