The Battle of the Coral Sea made history. It was the first naval battle in which the opposing ships never saw one another; the outcome was decided entirely by aircraft. And it marked the high point of the
Japanese expansion into the South Pacific. Their twin failures to take Port Moresby on the southern coast of New Guinea, and establish a seaplane base in the Eastern Solomons, meant the supply route from the United States to Australia
would remain open.
The game captures the drama of this earliest carrier battle, using all its critical elements: fuel limits, approaching weather fronts, critical decisions about search patterns, land-based aircraft,
submarines, shore bombardment, etc. All of it is arrayed in a playable game system with 10 historical scenarios, ranging from a two turn solitaire exercise to a four-day campaign game.
