On 1 August 1914, The First World War -- the War to End All wars -- began. What the
powers thought would be a swift and decisive conflict quickly stalemated into one of the saddest bloodbaths in the history of mankind. "Home before the leaves fall," a phrase that
expressed the high spirited confidence of nations marching to assured victory, became a grim jest on the fields of France and Eastern Europe. From the German sweep through Belgium to the Russian disasters in
East Prussia, from the Italian debacle at Caporetto to the abortive Allied thrusts through the Balkans, World War I discloses the enormous strategic scope of this struggle in a game system
specially designed to combine historicity with ease of play. In addition to the armies of both major and minor powers, each player commands the national
resources that can enhance or limit a Power's ability to create new armies, absorb losses, and generally carry on the war. A detailed map of embattled
Europe, including all major geographic features, provides an authentic playing area for this historic re-enactment.
